Amazon Prime Subscribers Now Get GrubHub Plus Free for One Year

Amazon Prime customers in the US are getting a new benefit as part of their subscription, the company has announced. Starting today, they’ll be able to redeem one free year of Grubhub Plus, a monthly subscription service that offers free food delivery on orders over $12 from participating restaurants. Grubhub Plus normally costs $9.99 per month.

According to Amazon, free delivery with Grubhub Plus is available at hundreds of thousands of restaurants in more than 4,000 US cities. After the year ends, Grubhub will automatically begin charging $9.99 per month for continued access. Existing Grubhub Plus customers can still use the promotion, which will be in effect from the start of their next billing cycle. Canceling Prime automatically cancels Grubhub Plus.

The deal comes just a few years after Amazon closed Amazon Restaurants, its attempt to compete in the takeout delivery market. The service was live between 2015 and 2019, but faced stiff competition from the likes of Uber Eats and DoorDash.

Since then, the e-commerce giant has primarily focused on grocery delivery, but has kept a toe in the takeout delivery market through partnerships with other firms. It announced an investment in Europe-focused Deliveroo in 2019, and last year began offering access to its Deliveroo Plus subscription service in the UK as an added benefit for Prime members.

Grubhub CEO Adam DeWitt said in a statement, “Amazon has redefined convenience with Prime and we believe this offering will add many new additions to the value of Grubhub Plus while driving more business for our restaurant partners and drivers. Will expose diners.” The company, owned by Just Eat Takeaway.com, says that Grubhub Plus subscriptions are expected to increase as a result of the deal.

GrubHub Plus isn’t the only additional benefit Amazon is announcing today for Prime members. The e-commerce giant is also making a short teaser trailer for its upcoming Lord of the Rings TV show. Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Available for 48 hours exclusively for Prime subscribers. Subscribers can watch the teaser on the show’s Amazon page. Trailer ends promising yet another The teaser is coming out on 14th July before the series releases on 2nd September.
