Apple employees to return to office in September under hybrid model

Apple has informed employees that they will be expected to return to the office three days per week starting September 5, according to internal emails seen by them. ledge, The news was first reported by bloomberg,

All Bay Area employees will be expected to arrive on Tuesday and Thursday, with individual teams judging by the third day each week. Employees have the option of working remotely twice a week.

The news marks the debut of Apple’s much-delayed hybrid work model, which was announced in June 2021. The announcement caused a wave of activism within the company as employees protested returning to work. Those protests died down as Apple continued to delay the hybrid work model because of the pandemic.

CEO Tim Cook and SVP of Software Engineering Craig Federighi sent employees memos, which we’ve included below.

memo from tim cook

crew,

The initial ramp-in phase of our Hybrid Work pilot has been a great opportunity to come together, reconnect with our teams, and meet new colleagues in person. It has been a transition for many of us as we navigate the changing case rates in many parts of the world, so thank you for your teamwork and professionalism as we move forward.

I’m writing to you today with two updates, one about the changes being made to our hybrid pilot, and the other about its timing.

When we announced the pilot a year ago, we said it would be a learning experience for all of us. And we committed ourselves to adapting the way we create a resilient environment that enables our teams to thrive. Based on the feedback and insights we have received from you and your managers, we are making the following adjustments:

The teams participating in the pilot will come to the office three days each week with scheduled days in the company on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but now that you will come on the third day, it will be decided by your teams. Each team will work to decide which day is right for them, and you’ll hear from their leaders soon. As before, many employees will have the option of working remotely for two days a week. Depending on your role, you will also have the option of working remotely for up to four weeks a year.

We are excited to move forward with the pilot and believe this revised framework will enhance our ability to work flexibly, while preserving the personal collaboration that is so essential to our culture. We also know that we still have much to learn. And we are committed to listening, adapting and growing together in the coming weeks and months.

In terms of timing, many places around the world are at different stages and you’ll hear more details shortly. For the Santa Clara Valley, we plan to begin our newly adjusted pilot with all employees in office over three days starting the week of September 5th.

In the near future, as the situation develops, we will continue to navigate the pandemic together. We are monitoring the data closely and will continue to receive updates on health and safety protocols for your location as necessary from our COVID-19 response team. In the meantime, it’s encouraging that children under the age of five are now eligible for vaccination in many countries, and I urge anyone who is able to receive a vaccine or booster if you haven’t already. .

As we continue this journey, I want to say how grateful I am for everything you do. I can’t be more excited about the opportunities ahead, the impact we can have on the lives we touch, and the excellent team that makes this possible. I look forward to working with you at Apple to create a resilient environment where, together, we can make an even bigger difference in the lives of our users around the world.

Tim

Memo from Craig Federighi

crew,

This afternoon Tim sent a note to team members at Apple to get back to our hybrid pilot and office plans, and I wanted to know how this news would affect our team.

First of all, thanks a lot. The past few years have presented some real challenges for all of us, and I appreciate your passion and commitment to creating delightful, amazing, high quality software for our customers and developers around the world.

After years of being in limbo (and a few false starts) it’s really happening: The week of September 5th marks the true start of our Hybrid Work pilot in the Santa Clary Valley—and I personally experience the special energy of being Can’t wait to have us all in the office together again! Note: For all other locations, the restart dates may vary depending on the current conditions of COVID-19 around the world. You can expect to receive site specific communication soon from the COVID-19 response team along with timing details for your location.

As you read in Tim’s note, we are modifying the pilot such that our three days at the office include two days in which we all work together in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays (our company-wide days). and an additional day chosen by your team in the office, prioritizing collaboration with your immediate co-workers. Please share your input with your manager on your team’s third office day in the coming week. This will help them determine which day works best for the overall team.

Needless to say, this next phase is a pilot, so one thing we can be sure of is that we will learn a lot in the coming months.

I look forward to this next chapter and what lies ahead.

See you soon!

– Craig
