British astronomer William Lassell made the discovery of Triton, a moon of Neptune, in 1846.

It orbits its home planet in a retrograde direction and is the biggest moon in the solar system.

Its surface is -391 degrees Fahrenheit and has a tenuous nitrogen atmosphere.

It is one of the largest moons in the solar system, with a circumference of roughly 1,680 miles.

Voyager has observed debris erupting from Triton's surface in the form of black plumes.

These plumes were carried 150 kilometres downwind and spun at a height of around eight kilometres.

By sending a spacecraft to travel to Triton and Neptune, scientists hope to gain more insight into these events.
