As It Flies, the Air Force's Secret New Fighter Jet Will Receive Software Updates.

According to the US Air Force, its next-generation fighter jet will have a brand-new capability.

The computer system of Next-Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) will allow the aircraft to update the software that controls the hardware.

Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown revealed the information last week during a roundtable discussion on the secret new fighter jet.

The F-22 Raptor and other Air Force fighters will be replaced by the NGAD fighter.

A technology demonstrator has already flown, but the aircraft itself will not see widespread use until the early 2030s.

The Air Force and its defence contractors must conduct flight tests to ensure that the upgrade does not impair the aircraft's flight controls inadvertently.

As a result, NGAD, and most likely all future Air Force aircraft, will be able to receive new software updates more quickly.
