The United States Air Force has made a new AFWERX investment in the Boom Supersonic Airliner.

Boom Supersonic, a Denver, Colorado-based aerospace company developing a supersonic airliner capable of flying at speeds exceeding Mach 1,

Boom was awarded the Strategic Funding Increase (STRATFI) contract by the Air Force's innovation arm, AFWERX, and its AFVentures division.

The announcement is the Air Force's latest financial investment in Boom, and represents a significant increase over the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase 2 contract.

Boom will eventually be able to better meet the needs of the Air Force where it uses commercially derived aircraft.

Boom's future supersonic air transportation plans made significant progress in 2021.

Boom's current supersonic research and development focus is on the XB-1, a sub-scale supersonic demonstrator aircraft that was first unveiled in October 2020.

The company also plans to break ground on its Overture manufacturing facility this year, with future plans to launch Overture in 2025.
